Creosote and debris buildup is a huge cause for chimney fires, poor airflow, fireplace inefficiency, masonry deterioration, and a whole slew of other issues. Which is why regular inspections and sweeping are such an important investment. If you need care, our sweeps are standing by, ready to help with it all.

Does My Chimney Need Sweeping?

Not sure where your system stands? Set up an appointment with us to perform an inspection and sweeping to ensure everything is safe for use and able to function as efficiently as possible. And in the meantime, keep an eye out for these common signs of buildup.

  • Smoky Living Space: If any smoke is coming into the room where the fireplace is located, there may be a blockage in your flue. These invite fire hazards, and you’ll also be more prone to experience carbon monoxide exposure, too.
  • Foul Odors: Notice a rich tar-like smell emanating from your fireplace? A musty, water-like smell? Something similar to a burnt barbecue? All indicate a high volume of creosote, which increases your risk of chimney fires significantly.
  • Weak fires: If you’re finding it difficult to build and maintain a strong fire, it’s likely your fireplace needs to be swept.  And delaying this service often increases creosote buildup because the wood is not burning properly.

You can also attempt to look inside the chimney yourself. Make sure to wear a dust mask and safety goggles before proceeding. Then, using a bright flashlight, shine it into the flue and scrape into the chimney soot that’s attached to the walls of the flue. If the soot measures more than 1/8-inch in thickness, your chimney needs cleaning.
