Hire Us for Your Next Level 1, 2, or 3 Chimney Inspection

Taking steps to ensure your system is free of damage before each burning season is important for maintaining the safety of your home and family. Unfortunately, many chimney companies use these annual check-ins as an opportunity to tack on extra fees and scare you into purchasing services you don’t actually need.

Here at Madewell, we do things differently. Customers turn to us time and time again because we’re always transparent, honest, and happy to work with your unique needs. Best of all, we’re not about offering complicated pricing and surprise charges. Unlike most chimney companies, we keep it simple, performing both your cleaning and a full inspection for one flat fee.

If you need a level 1, 2, or 3 chimney inspection, we’re the team to call.

What Can I Expect During My Inspection?

When we perform inspections they typically take around 1 hour. First, we’ll lay down a drop cloth to protect your floor from any dust and soot. (We ask that you clear any furniture and mantel decor away from the space ahead of time to reduce the risk of damage.)

We’ll then do the inspection and cleaning, after which you’ll be provided with a condition report on your chimney and fireplace. This will include whether we spotted any hazards, as well as suggestions for scheduling your next appointment.

And that’s all there is to it! Once we’re through, feel free to ask any questions, then just sit back and rest easier knowing your fireplace needs are all taken care of.

What Type of Inspection Do I Need?

Not sure which level of inspection you need? Here’s some insight into each.

Level 1: Are you diligent about booking inspections before every single burning season? Then, as long as you haven’t invested in any big updates, repairs, or renovations in the last year (or experienced adverse weather events or chimney fires), a level 1 inspection should be all you need.

What happens during a level 1 inspection? We’ll examine all parts of your chimney that can be easily accessed without the use of tools. We’ll also ensure you have no clogs or obstructions and that your system is structurally sound enough to function safely and efficiently in the months ahead.

Level 2: A level 2 inspection is more in-depth than a level 1, and it allows us an up-close look at every portion of the flue interior. When are they required or recommended? Here’s a rundown of instances where we’d say a level 2 inspection is a must:

      • It’s been more than a year since your last inspection.
      • You’ve experienced a chimney fire.
      • You’ve experienced a natural disaster, like a tornado, flood, earthquake, etc.
      • You’ve recently upgraded or updated your appliance (e.g. switched fuel types, had relining work done, or upgraded to an insert).
      • You’re planning to upgrade or update your appliance.
      • You are buying or selling a home.

A level 2 inspection will include everything in a level 1, with the addition of a camera inspection. The camera will be snaked up the flue, thoroughly examining all parts of the system. The sweep may also use basic tools to remove any doors, coverings, or panels to ensure all of your fireplace’s clearances are being appropriately met.

Level 3: Level 3 inspections aren’t nearly as common as level 1 or level 2, but they are needed on occasion, and we’re equipped to get them done. During these, otherwise permanent areas of your home or chimney may need to be removed or demoed to get to the root of problems that can’t be uncovered in a level 2 inspection. This could mean removing the chimney crown, certain interior or exterior chimney walls, or potentially the drywall or exterior walls of your home near the chimney.
